The Origin of Drama 🎭
The origin of drama dates back to the early stages of human civilization. It is an art form that began with a religious and ritualistic nature, going far beyond mere entertainment. Primitive humans performed rituals based on various beliefs and faiths to ensure successful hunts and seek protection from natural forces. Through these practices—such as wearing masks, rhythmic movements, and imitation—the fundamental characteristics of drama emerged. The formal beginning of Western drama is marked by Greece , rooted in festivals held in honor of the god Dionysus. In the East, drama developed academically through Bharata Muni’s 'Natya Shastra' in India. Within the Sri Lankan context, folk drama and healing rituals (Shanthikarma) are identified as the primary origins of the craft. Accordingly, drama is the most powerful and living medium of art discovered by humans to express their emotions and experiences.
