The Father of Sinhala Literature


The person honored as the "Father of Modern Sinhala Literature" is the great Martin Wickramasinghe. Born on May 29, 1890, in Koggala, he was an unparalleled writer who breathed new life into the Sinhala language and its literature.

His masterpiece, "Gamperaliya," is considered a major turning point in history, as it steered the Sinhala novel in a completely new direction. He excelled at analyzing village life, culture, and social changes with great depth. Works like Madol Doova, Viragaya, and Kaliyugaya are among his most outstanding creations.
